Sixth Form Life at Furze Platt

Sixth Form Centre

Our brand new, purpose designed Sixth Form Centre offers students an environment to meet, relax and socialise with friends and a place to study, either independently or in small groups. This is an exciting addition to our school in support of the Sixth Form experience of our students. Two study areas are provided; a silent space for concentration and a separate space that offers the opportunity for discussion and study in a relaxed atmosphere.

Throughout the school there are other areas that Sixth Form students can study; the main library, the English block atrium and booths around the main hall, although silent study is required in these areas and food or drink is not permitted.

Mobile Phone free School

Furze Platt is a mobile phone free school, however Sixth Form students are allowed to have their mobile phone and head phones with them whilst at school in certain areas. These areas are; the main Sixth Form Centre, Teacher Supervised study sessions in the main hall and during study periods in the library. Phones and headphones are restricted from use in any other area of the school where sanctions will be applied accordingly.

Student Leadership

We encourage and value the opportunity for leadership and the benefits this brings to our students in their transition through Sixth Form. Senior Students are appointed to represent our community and help to organise and engage with lower school students, parents and beyond school. They are an integral part of our Open Days and Celebration evenings. Further leadership opportunities are offered through House Captaincy, Student Council and mentoring programmes of younger students. This involves students with things such as house challenges, fundraising and developing mentoring skills. These roles all support the development of key demonstrable skills which are valuable to life beyond school.

Tutor Programme

Our Sixth Form Tutor Programme is an enrichment programme to support the transition students experience during their time in Sixth Form. Tutors support students with academic support (link), achievement (link to progress?) and attendance. (link? )

There is also a focus on future careers and destinations (link) post sixth form and wider personal development, as well as assemblies and challenges.

The Tutor programme is an important part of the Furze Platt Sixth Form Charter (link) and is an integral part of life at FP Sixth Form.

Study Support

The Sixth Form Study Guide explains some of the things students can be doing from day 1 of Sixth Form to prepare for their final exams. Academic support is available from Teachers, Tutors, Supervised Study Manager, Learning Mentor, Heads of Progress and Head of Sixth Form. All of whom guide students in the transition towards effective independent study habits.

UCAS, Higher Education, Apprenticeships and Jobs

Comprehensive support is provided to ensure students understand every option available to them post Sixth Form. A dedicated Careers Manager supports Sixth Form with advice into University, Apprenticeships and work alongside the Tutor Programme which ensures students are supported with applications to jobs, Apprenticeships and University. Our weekly Sixth Form newsletter has regularly updated careers, Apprenticeships and UCAS information.

In preparation for the outside world, a week of Work Experience is supported in Year 12 and employer interviews and feedback is provided to develop interview practice and interpersonal skills.

REC and Extra Curricular Opportunities

A period of recreation is part of our timetable where students have the opportunity to choose an activity that reflects them or can be challenged by something they have not tried before.

In addition there is a programme of speakers and presentations and regular off-site trips accessible to students.
