Message from RBWM 3.7.23

Essential maintenance works on Cookham Bridge are due to start from 16th October 2023 for a period of approximately 20 weeks. A road closure on the bridge is due to be in place from Monday 16th October.

We (RBWM) are investing in this vital route to ensure it serves the community long into the future and the work will extend the life of this historically significant bridge for decades to come. Because the bridge is Grade II* listed, it must be maintained and strengthened.

While the work is happening, the road will be closed to all motor traffic, but pedestrian access will be maintained. Cyclists will need to dismount before crossing the bridge. Access to any properties or business within the closure area will be maintained at all times.

Due to the technical and complex nature of the works, the work will happen in phases to ensure safe working practices, including:

• Structural Bearing Replacement
• Deck Strengthening
• Re-waterproofing & Re-surfacing
• Expansion Joint Replacement
• Repair and re-painting of the parapets

When will the works take place?

Working hours will be limited to 7am – 9pm (up to seven days a week when required) to reduce disruption for residents. If work outside these times is required, the community will be notified in advance.

The community will be kept informed of road closures.

Communities and businesses will be notified in advance of any work starting to minimise disruption as much as possible, and advance road signage will be in place prior to work commencing to help motorists plan their journeys. Updates will be provided throughout the project.

The diversion route will follow the A4094 south from Cookham, west along the A4 Bath Road, north on the A404, and along the A4155 Marlow Road, with this route in reverse for traffic on the northern side of the bridge. (A map of the route is at the bottom of the page.)

Local journeys will be affected, and you may notice extra activity in the area or hear some noise while work is underway. During the works, normal journey times in the area may increase, and motorists are advised to allow additional time to complete their journey. Please look out for advance road signage when you’re travelling through the area and plan your trip in advance to avoid delays.
