Open Evening:

Once again Open Evening was very successful and extremely well attended. Once again we received very favourable comments about the helpfulness and approachability of our staff and the positive and informative tours provided by our student guides.

Speech Day:

Speech Evening took place on Thursday 29th November. Our Special Guest was Peter Rose, Project manager of Diamond trading Company and school GreenPower sponsor. 145 pupils received prizes at Speech Day this year which proved to be a very positive evening. Our guest speaker described it as ‘uplifting’. As always, special thanks go to Jenny Lockwood for the smooth organisation of the event and Mr Darwood for organising the champagne reception.

Africa Day

All our Year 7s have spent a day this term following a cross curricular arts project. This project enables them to explore the art, music, drama and cultural heritage of different African traditions. The sessions are very popular with students and staff alike and yet again evaluations were extremely positive.

Curriculum Update

English

  • Following our success in the Rotary Club writing competition last year, we will be entering creative writing pieces at all three Key Stages this year.  We are also hosting the prizewinners’ event at Furze Platt so hope for further success.
  • Last year we took 15 students to see their GCSE poets in action and listen to advice from the Chief Examiner for AQA.  It was clearly enjoyed because we had an enthusiastic uptake this year and had to order additional tickets.  On January 23rd we took 60 students to this event.
  • The Globe Theatre Company came into school on 27th February to present ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ to Year 9.  They have been many times before and it has proved to be a valuable and enjoyable experience. It makes a real difference to the students’ understanding of their set scenes.
  • We are taking Year 7 to Shakespearience in Stratford on 11th June.  We have not run this trip before and will report back after the event.  The pupils will have the opportunity to attend Shakespeare workshops and see a production of a mix of plays.  It should be a lively and entertaining introduction to the bard in his home town.
