Curriculum Update - Sixth Form
Exams
This term has been dominated by exams. All Year 12 and 13 took module exams throughout May and June.
Year 13 last day
Once again the students were exceptionally well behaved and enjoyed their last assembly. The theme was Cowboys and Native Americans.
Careers Week
- We have just finished another successful careers week. We held over 20 workshops in different careers. Students attended talks and took part in activities to help them narrow down their career options. We are in the process of evaluating the week now, however, anecdotal feedback suggest the students got a lot from it.
- UCAS Day – A whole day was devoted to UCAS. We ran one session on how to log on and how the online form works, one session on help with personal statements, one session on the do’s and don’ts at university that included health and finance talks. There was also a parents’ evening that provided information on the application process and finance for parents. All students in Year 12 have now logged on to UCAS and are researching their courses.
- Students are booking open days at universities: they can book 5 visits.
Visits to other Sixth Forms
We have two fact finding visits planned to other schools this term. We are going to an outstanding sixth form in North Somerset. This is where Steve Richards trained as an NQT as he thought it would be useful to go to a school he knew. He will be taking the head boy/head girl and our two student governors. Mr Richards has also made an initial visit to Cranford Community College with another follow up visit planned; this will include a mini student leadership conference.
Student leadership appointments
- All applicants for the position of head boy and head girl were interviewed and the decision to appoint Mischa Hunt and Ben Scrace was a very difficult one amongst such a strong field, but they did do exceptionally well.
- Matt Collins and Nikita Phiri were appointed as our two student governors.
- All house captains have been appointed and attended the first Sixth Form Council meeting.
- The first event the Sixth Form Leadership team are running is the D-Day collection for the Alzheimer’s Charity Shop in Maidenhead.
3 Peaks
Training sessions for the 3 peaks team have been running throughout the term since Easter. The two groups participating are really excited and looking forward to the challenge, they have been working exceptionally hard.
Extended Project (EPQ)
- Our first groups through on the EPQ were very successful. The students found it very difficult as they were stretched and challenged throughout. Their presentations took place in the Ofsted week and they were nothing short of inspirational. They had clearly worked exceptionally hard on their projects and the marks they received reflected this.
- Throughout the year Steve Richards trained 12 members of staff to be mentors. We are looking to roll out the EPQ to more students this year. We are offering it to more of next year’s Year13 and to another Year 12 cohort.
Mufti Day
Sixth Form students ran the collection for the Mufti Day and the whole school raised £1100 for Daisy’s Dream, a bereavement charity that works closely with our students.
University Taster Day
A select group of students are attending a selection of taster day courses at various universities. One of our students has been accepted on the Eton Summer School course.
6th Form Prom
This took place on Monkey Island on June 30th, and the whole evening was completely organised by the students themselves.
Taster Day
Once again this will take place for Year 11 students who are hoping to return to Year 12 next year. It will run using the same format as last year.
Applications for Sixth Form
All students who applied for next year’s sixth form have been interviewed and successful candidates have been offered conditional places.
