Curriculum Update - PSHE and Citizenship
Staffing
Mia Dawson left the school at Easter and we have appointed Laura Lewis, an NQT who will be joining us in September. This term the resulting vacancy has been filled by Sarah Naylor who was a History teacher here a few years ago and has now returned for a term of supply teaching. We are very fortunate to have her here and she is doing an excellent job.
Curriculum
The recent Government decision to make PSHE compulsory from 2011 has now been reversed, so the programmes of study for PSHE remain non-statutory, although some aspects of them – careers educated, work related learning and sex education are already statutory. We will continue to teach PSHE schemes of work and will continue to update them along with the Citizenship and Careers Education schemes of work.
Investors in Careers
Our evidence for Stage 3 of the IiC award was due to be assessed on 15th July. The position of this award is now uncertain. The PSHE department’s contribution to this includes providing evidence to show that we have included students in the evaluation of the Careers Education programme and that we include lessons about, and using, Labour Market Information in Careers Education.
Work Experience
Year 10 students had their week of work experience during the week beginning Monday 28th June. As part of the preparation for Work Experience all year 10 students were off timetable for the morning of 21st June and attended the Skills for Life morning which was organised and run by the EBP. Over the morning students attended six thirty minute workshops on Customer Service / Telephone Techniques, Dress and Impress, Working with People, Health and Safety, Interview Techniques and General Preparation. The workshops were run by staff from the EBP and employers form organisations such as Mars, John Guest and the Army. The morning was a great success. Feedback from students was very positive as were the comments about our students form the EBP and guest employers. They said that our students were well behaved, well mannered, interested and cooperative and that they were the best students they had worked with.
Army Schools Challenge
Once again a team of fifteen Year 10 students recently took part in the Schools Challenge event run by the Army, which was held at Easthampstead Park School. Students were required to carry out a series of activities requiring mental and physical agility, competing against 15 other schools from Berkshire. Our students were, as always, fantastic. Not only did each one of them give of their best during each challenge but they also supported each other really well and worked brilliantly as a team. It was a pleasure to be with them. Their hard work paid off; we won the event by coming first out of the sixteen teams.
