Physical Education

Furze Platt School has a sports hall, gymnasium, three rugby/soccer pitches, two hockey pitches, five netball courts, two cricket squares, eight tennis courts and a full complement of athletic track and field amenities. In addition the department has Information Technology and audio-visual facilities.

In Years 7, 8 and 9 (Key Stage 3) pupils are taught in half-year mixed set groups. Over the two week timetable they have four lessons. During these years the pupils are taught and assessed at badminton, basketball, dance, gymnastics and skills. Boys and girls follow a separate programme for rugby/hockey, soccer/netball, cross country, athletics, cricket/tennis and health related fitness lessons.

Years 10 and 11 have three periods of PE a fortnight. All lessons are geared to game play, officiating and coaching with an aim to promote pupils future interest in sport and personal fitness. We have Year 10 and Year 11 GCSE PE Groups. This year we gained an excellent 87% A*-C grades. One student was in the top ten nationally out of 65,000 candidates. In the Sixth Form we offer AS / A2 Physical Education which is proving to be popular. A'level results were the best ever this year with 75% gaining C or above.

In addition to internal competitions, the school has an extensive list of fixtures against other schools. This has helped many of our pupils gain recognition at District and County level.

The department contributes to the school's wide choice of outside trips and visits. These include an annual ski trip to various destinations and conference trips for AS/A2 students. A very popular Dance Show is also organised each year.

We have firm links with East Berkshire Badminton Association, North Maidenhead Cricket and Phoenix and Maidenhead Rugby Clubs.

It is important to recognise that Physical Education and Games assists the full development of the child. It prepares pupils for life roles, other than a job or career. It enhances their ability to work with others, handle competition and to accept authority. Physical Education also encourages an appreciation of personal standards (dress, fair-play, health and hygiene).
