Music
The Music Department has two specialist teachers plus 12 visiting instrumental and vocal teachers. The accommodation consists of two classrooms; five practice rooms and a room for instrumental teaching. In Year 7 - 9 all pupils receive one hour per week of Music. Lessons are based on three course activities. LISTENING COMPOSING and Performing are therefore mainly practical. Pupils use a range of classroom instruments and electronic keyboards and those who learn instruments are encouraged to bring them to use in the lessons. The aim of the lower school course is to engage all pupils in making Music. Through the composing and performing of their own pieces they acquire a deeper understanding and personal involvement in the language of Music and the work of established composers. In Year 10 and 11 Music is an option subject for GCSE. 'A' level Music is also available for pupils who wish to study the subject in the sixth form. Extra curricular Music is an important part of the Department's work, especially to support and enhance the efforts of those learning an instrument. We currently run a JUNIOR CHOIR, SENIOR CHOIR, JUNIOR WIND BAND, SENIOR BAND and CHAMBER ORCHESTRA and are involved in the production of annual musicals. There is a regular programme of concerts within the school as well as opportunities to perform out of school. Nearly 200 pupils currently receive instrumental and vocal lessons at the school, with our specialist visiting teachers. Opportunities exist for FLUTE, CLARINET, BASSOON, OBOE, SAXOPHONE, all BRASS instruments, VIOLIN, VIOLA, CELLO, DRUM KIT, GUITAR, PIANO and singing.
