History

The History Department comprises six specialist teachers, who teach a combination of History, Politics or Economics at 'A' level. The Department has three main teaching rooms, with access to audiovisual and computer equipment.

In Years 7 to 9 pupils have three hours of History per fortnight. Each set will be taught at a pace appropriate to their ability, with some differentiated work to allow individual pupils to progress at their own rate. Pupils' progress is carefully monitored across the Department, with regular review of their sets. Pupils with Special Educational Needs are identified at an early stage. Pupils follow a broadly based grounding in History, (Political, Economic, Social, Religious and Cultural) in accordance with National Curriculum criteria. The modules comprise:

Year 7

  • Romans
  • Medieval Real

Year 8

  • Making of the UK
  • Britain 1700 - 1900

Year 9

  • Era of World War I
  • Indigenous People of N. America

Within each module they will be required to develop skills of knowledge and understanding, interpretation of History, use of historical evidence and the effective organisation and communication of ideas.

The Department aim to balance the essential components, to foster a real interest in the post and to develop oral, written and IT skills. Pupils will be given the opportunity to be involved in group work activities, role-play and to visit historical sites.

In Year 10 and 11, we follow the OCR Modern World syllabus. Students receive 5 hours teaching per fortnight. They sit two examination papers, worth 45% and 30% of the final mark, respectively, and a 25% coursework element.

It is expected that each year a large number of our students will progress to Advanced Level studies in History.
