Geography
Geography is taught by six specialist teachers. It is a National Curriculum subject for all pupils up to Year 9. As an option subject in the upper school, geography is popular up to GCSE, with over 100 pupils in Year 11 taking the subject. It is also a successful subject in the Sixth Form at both AS and A2 levels. Field study and practical work are used to develop an enquiry approach. The school exploits the opportunities provided by Information Technology, television programmes, varied printed resources, textbooks, atlases, globes, etc. The subject is organised to provide a coherent progression through the school for as long as the individual requires (i.e. up to university entrance). In Year 7 pupils will build on the geographical skills learned at their previous school, learning more about the world and the geographical issues that surround them. They will discover, by field observation and mapping, the wide variety of land uses in the Furze Platt area. They will in turn link the present land use to the physical and historical character of the area. The Year 7 course makes use of many visual resources in studying the following topics - making connections, rivers, people, flooding, work and exploring the UK. In Years 8 to 13 the aim is to enhance the knowledge, understanding and skills of all pupils. They are given opportunities for local and residential field study. Pupils of all levels and ability are offered individual assistance and their progress monitored though regular assessment. All pupils are also encouraged to evaluate their own progress. All pupils have a Record Sheet in their exercise book which shows marks, targets, teacher comments and academic awards.
