Travel & Tourism

Key Stage 4 Travel and Tourism:

Course Outline:

The BTEC Travel and Tourism classes follow the Pearson BTEC Level 1 / Level 2 Tech Award in Travel and Tourism. The course comprises of 3 components:

Component 1: Travel and Tourism Organisations and Destinations

This includes the investigation of the aims of UK travel and tourism organisations and exploring travel and tourism destinations.

Component 2: Customer needs in Travel and Tourism.

This component looks at how organisations use market research to identify travel and tourism trends and culminates in students planning a holiday to meet customer needs.

Component 3: Influences on Global Travel and Tourism.

Here students will explore the different factors influencing global travel and tourism and how organisations need to respond to them, as well as looking at the impact of tourism and sustainable tourism.

Assessment and Grading:

Components 1 and 2 are assessed in school through tasks or assignments. These are marked by the teachers so students will receive feedback as to how they are getting on.  The assessment for Component 3 covers the different factors that influence global travel and tourism and is an external exam which means it is sent away to be marked.

Students need to pass all 3 components to get a qualification.  The grades awarded are (lowest to highest): Level 1 Pass, Level 1 Merit, Level 1 Distinction, Level 2 Pass, Level 2 Merit, Level 2 Distinction, Level 2 Distinction*.

Enrichment and Skills:

Throughout the 2 year course students will have the opportunity to visit a wide range of Tourist Destinations in the UK.  In recent years students have visited London, Bath, Oxford, Windsor, West Wittering, Thorpe Park and Madame Tussauds.

By the end of Year 11 students will have developed valuable knowledge, practical skills and a wider understanding of the travel and tourism industries. The skills and knowledge they will have gained will provide a sound basis for progression to further study or gain employment in the travel and tourism organisations.

Textbooks

In lessons students will use the ‘BTEC Tech Award Travel and Tourism’ student book and will also be given access to the e-Book version to support them with home learning and revision.
